Yes. 100 years ago London had electric taxis that worked great!
We had public transit systems in place all across America that were highly functional.
That system was systematically ripped out by the oil-garchs. They were minimally punished in a court of law and then rewarded by the State with positions of power in government.
Prohibition was really a way to eliminate decentralized energy - as alcohol fuel was just as good as petroleum and easy for any farmer and individual to produce.
The first Model T was built to run on all kinds of fuel - hemp oil and alcohol. It was even made out of hemp, which is stronger than steel!
