he had some guys in his company who couldn't manage their money and always had bill collectors after them.

Figure some 18 year old kids with sudden access to monthly income and there were always lots of new car lots near bases. Easy to sign the papers on that Camaro for a no money down car payment when you have never had to pay rent and utilities.
