There are five different military discharges: Honorable, General, Undesirable, Bad Conduct and Dishonorable.
The first three are issued administratively. The last two by certain courts martial.
The significance of the type of discharge is it determines what post service benefits a veteran may obtain and the "effect" of having something other than an Honorable Discharge.
A general discharge entitles an former service member to virtually the same benefits as a honorable discharge. The undesirable, bad conduct and dishonorable entitle the former service member to virtually no benefits. There's really not much difference between them, certainly not as much as there is in the public perception.
