will not officially count in the NCAA record books, but they will matter for several reasons:

First, it will be good publicity in the KC area for whichever team wins.

Second, and people can deny it all they want, there WILL be some bragging rights at stake for the fans of whichever team wins, and irritation for the fans of whichever team loses.

Third, an MU win would increase the hype for the upcoming season even more, which would be fun. A loss might have the opposite effect.

Fourth, playing this game as competitively as possible would help prepare the team for the season opener against ISU, and a win could help to build their confidence.

Fifth, and perhaps the most relevant, the only way this game leads to a regular-season series is if MU wins. If KU wins, they have no reason to schedule a rematch, but if they lose, it might bother them enough to want a rematch in 2018-2019.

Sixth, if this game really is just a one-time thing (i.e. it doesn't lead to resurrecting the Border War), then it will be our last chance to beat KU in hoops for a really long time. We should give 100% effort to take advantage of that, even if it's just an exhibition game.

People can downplay this as "just an exhibition game" but there is more at stake than that. I really hope that Cuonzo treats this like a regular-season game and tells the players to do the same.
