Over the past few days it has struck me that the current situation is similar to 2000.
The program had two very good seasons in 1997 & 1998, then struggled in 1999 and 2000 with Larry Smith being replaced by Gary Pinkel after the 2000 season.
Currently, the program had two very good seasons in 2013 and 2014, but has struggled since.
Many fans blame Odon's coaching for the downturn, but it seems very clear that this is an "and", not an "or" situation. There are coaching issues "and" talent issues. It's not just one or the other.
It took Pinkel about half a dozen seasons to rebuild the program to the 1997/98 level. It wasn't until 2007, that the Tigers were more or less competitive with the best teams in the Big XII.
Rebuilding the talent level takes time. Recruiting has to improve. True frosh have to becomes juniors and seniors. It doesn't happen in one or two seasons.
Firing Odom and hiring a new coach is not risk free. Onofrio, Powers, Woody, Stull and Smith were expected to produce good football. Some did for a while, but eventually all were fired.
Mizzou is not the best nor the worst situation in the SEC East. The program does have some limitations, mostly in its ability (or inability) to match other SEC East programs' ability to generate resources.
A standard refrain is hire a proven coach, break the bank if necessary to land him. That's not necessarily a sure thing. Stull had won at UMass and UTEP and Smith at Arizona and USC.
And a proven coach may require more than just a lot of $$$ to take the job. Salary well be important, but so to is the opportunity to win. I'm not sure that you want to throw a lot of $$$ at a guy who's taking the job just for the $$$ and can live with losing.
All in all, it strikes me that Sterk is going to earn his salary with this decision and that it's going to determine the fate of Tiger football for the next decade.
