escape plan that he could not have pulled off on his own "unless he was a superhero".

He did not give details on what that escape plan appeared to be, however.

I suppose it is possible that he had been promised help to escape and then was abandoned... either left to die as a patsy, or something went wrong.

Perhaps there is additional information they are not sharing with the public yet.
