Second Amendment was written as the final check on federal powers. Just in case the checks built into the three branches were ignored or overturned. I would suggest they had amazing foresight because that is exactly what has happened over the past sixty years.

I am not suggesting armed insurrection and even if I were the limitations placed on the second amendment in recent history would make any such insurrection short, bloody and one sided.
