Rhodes was brand new when GP took him down. I firmly believe that Pinkel would not have been able to let the football program be used to prop up a fake protest (originally about grad student health insurance if you recall) had Mike Alden still been our AD. I've always believed that.
However, this new AD had little power over the guy who resurrected Mizzou football. There was nothing he could do to keep Gary Pinkel from destroying his still new tenure at Mizzou. I now believe the softball controversy was just an attempt by Rhodes to reestablish some authority since GP totally marginalized Rhodes & his department. I think Earlywine was a victim of 'beat up the biggest guy in the room' to send a message.
The damage done by GP was insurmountable for any new AD. Rhodes certainly made it worse with the softball fiasco, but he was done the day GP took the damn picture with the idiots who fell for the chubby rich kid's hunger strike.
I initially thought it was funny that Rhodes inherited a train wreck in Baylor, but the move to Baylor just shows how bad GP made it for him here. I really don't blame a damn thing on Rhodes any longer. This is a 10 year problem for admissions and football, and it could have only been stopped by 1 guy. Gary Pinkel.
Odom probably isn't the guy to fix this, but he went easy on GP in his post game rant. He hinted at it, but he could have/should have gone further. Gary Pinkel did this, and the idea that he's running around with a book like some hero is due to a dishonest press not calling it as it actually happened.
Nobody came out better from his decision. The program is a wreck, dorms are empty, a fewer percentage of incoming freshmen are black than prior to the strike. I'm glad he's healthy and happy now, but the illness only stopped his resignation or outright firing. The decision can only fall into 2 categories, neither admirable. It was either made through cowardice or outright stupidity. If there is a 3rd, that would be a little of both w/ a little arrogance sprinkled on top. I'm guessing that's where the decision derived.
