By as the article was written by a Yalie, I felt compelled to read it.

I wonder what role - obvious role proximity plays in these statistics. If black folks live with black folks and white folks live with white folks - it makes sense that black folks kill black folks. Then you would need to address also the role that local economic well-being, economic oppty, education, infrastructure (both physical social) play in generating these stats. Gangs and drug war come to mind too - as does the easy accessibility of guns, made easy b/c the US Citizenry has the right to arm itself and its musket-bearing militias to over-throw oppressive federal over-reach.

This line jumped out at me too - "they want to provide protection to its many law-abiding residents who deserve safety" - kind of implying that others who live in these communities don't?
