Following WWII we had the great advantage of no competition in the world, much destroyed by the war, but nonetheless America invested the public purse in the GI Bill and there was strong union presence in mftr. Working class, essentially blue collar wages had continued steady pace of increase up until 1973. Pattern had been that productivity increases were followed by increases in wages. That practice ended in the 1990s when the bosses started to pocket the financial gains resulting from increased wages. There are a lot of factors at play of course. Ike put in the national hway system through the defense budget. That investment was a real boon for the nation but also resulted in a slow decline of urban investment as folks moved to the burbs.
