The fact that John McCain suffered as a soldier and rose above that suffering makes him - by definition - a hero.
You say he lost the race. Yes, he did. That a man is a hero doesn't mean he wins a political race. Just means he is a hero. He faced a far better candidate. You do that, you typically lose. Not ever time, but typically.
