You are proposing that everyone unify behind your belief and perception of what is good, what this country should be. You are essentially saying there is a particular set of ideals (which you are defining) and asking everyone to unify behind those ideals.
The essence of The United Srates is individual freedom and liberty to pursue one's own goals and believes subject to the very real restriction that one does nori impinge on the right of others to do the same. It is not that everyone pursues the same goals and ideals.
