do the right thing and quit. I still can't believe he made them fire him.

I'd like to think that had he been allowed to coach another season, when it became apparent that it too was a disaster that at some point he would finally step aside and have some decency towards the program and fan base. But that is just blind hope I suppose at this point in the face of all observable evidence to the contrary. Surely even if he was allowed to, he wouldn't have actually returned to the bench for MU in 2017-18.
