Wall Street won't finance new coal plants

It is as simple as that. They require a very large front end investment that takes 30 years to recoup. Wall Street has no confidence that market prices in the future will recoup the investment.

Gas on the other hand requires less front end investment, lowering the risk of stranded investment.

The good news is, Wall Street sees lower future energy prices. That is much more significant than savings a few hundred thousand coal jobs.

PS: I worked as a management consultant in the electric utility industry for over 30 years and have personally reviewed many "capacity expansion" planning studies.
