My point was that Tea Party caused the Republicans to throw out the moderates and replace them with further right. The Green Party/Progessives/Socialists have done the same thing on the other side. Both sides have basically said, "if you vote with the other side, you will be tossed out of the party in the primary"

I guess if you really wanted to find a root cause, it could be gerrymandering, as that has made it even more possible.
