insurance industry "issues" can be traced to company "downsizing".

There was a time people worked at a company for a long, long time. Their insurance benefits were stable and companies didn't have to shop for new providers every year. Staying with the same insurance provider for the long haul spread out the provider's risk over many years of providing services to the employees. As employees aged, the insurance company had a greater risk but that was offset by years of providing services to employees when they were younger.

Look to the 90's when companies got competitive and forced themselves to get lean and mean by laying off employees. Many of the personnel hired to fill the spots of those laid off were contract employees and either had to provide their own insurance or the contract employer didn't have the buying power to offer employees the same level of coverage for the same price they used to have.

Then look at the number of displaced workers unable to get full time employment with benefits and get stuck with the label of underemployed part time workers forced to shop for their own coverage. Once again, without the buying power of "the pool" and the risk being spread out over the multi-aged employees of "the pool" and the long term relationship with an insurance provider to spread the risk over many years, the part timers don't get anything close to affordable.

But hey, look at all the jobs farmed out to Mexico and India that saved the big corporations all that money.
