China mandated the 38th parallel as a buffer years ago. I bet Trump has been able to point out the buffer can be achieved without North Korea's problematic government, with significant savings to all.
For example, agree to keep Korea Bay clear of all combatant ships and keep north of 38th parallel minimally guarded, but roll North Korea into South Korea like a post Berlin Wall Germany.
