have a responsibility first to ourselves. That is not to put american lives at risk because two boys got in a schoolyard fight in iceland.
But we also have a responsibility as the most decent nation on earth to assist people in mortal danger. Chemical attacks are banned by treaty. Who will enforce it, the UfN?
If you walk down the street and see two twelve year olds (syria) robbing a little old lady and you can stop them....do you? Those two may have big brothers and uncles, so your interference may lead to more conflict. Do you help the little old lady, or does she die because you didn't want to get involved?
And in this scenario, the big brothers and uncles are no match for you. They may hurt you and delay you and inconvenience you, but you can beat them as well.
Should we be luxembourg?
We do not need to interfere in venezuala or other countries with small scale conflict that does not include wanton slaughter of innocents. But we have it in our power to save the lives of innocents.
The issue with syria imo, is what comes next. Have we embarked on a slippery slope of mission creep, or can we punish assad and save lives from a relatively safe distance?
I dunno, we'll see.
