I get that logic and I think this coaching hire makes all the sense in the world to spend big on, but there's no reason to spend way over what you need to. The money could be used elsewhere. For example, let's say the football team's offense is amazing in two years and Josh Heupel has head coaching offers from smaller schools. You pay him a million or two more to keep him for a few more years. MU has a lot more money but spend a lot more too. If you pay Kevin Keatts double what you would have to, that's money you could have spent on something else. What if Steve Bieser keeps winning and Texas offers him double his current salary, I'd like MU to be able to match that or come close. Over spending in any business can come back to bite you. Having said that, I do hope MU exceeds what they normally would do with this hire. This program needs it, just nothing crazy, like double what a coach is worth.
