My first run in with jheri curls I was fresh out of the academy and ran a call to the lab school gym where a black fraternity was hosting a dance and someone called because there was a guy in there flashing a handgun.

I am outside getting suspect info from the witnesses and radioing the info to another officer with several years on the dept. I am telling him the guy was carrying a man purse and he had jheri curls. Only I have no fricking idea what jheri curls are.

About then I look over to the other officer trying to stop a guy and get him to hand over this man purse. Dude puts it behind his back and his running buddy is trying to take the hand off. I have moved that way and reach in to get a firm hold on the bag. Tell them both to drop to their knees and put their hands on their heads.

Zip the bag open expecting to see a small .25 Saturday night special, because that's what the witnesses described. Instead I find a .45 Colt Combat Commander in a satin nickel finish. Really nice piece. Later find a .25 Gradoga POS in the bottom of the bag.

Both from Kansas City. Not students and not sure how they came to be at the dance.

About a couple of months later, my best friend from the academy and who works for CPD pulls up along side me in the lot across from Brewer and he's sporting jheri curls. He looks like Lionel Richie.
