The Missouri Tigers, picked to finish no higher than fourth in the Big Eight, proved their regular-season title was no fluke by capturing the postseason championship.

'Nobody believes in us except ourselves,' Missouri's Greg Church said. 'We don't get the publicity all year. We've been a sleeper all year.

'We don't have any pressure,' Coward said. 'We don't have any seniors. We're never on national TV. Everybody talks about Kansas and Oklahoma. But that's all from the past. Now is now. It's the future. We won the Big Eight and we won the tournament.'

'We demand a lot and expect a lot at Missouri,' Tigers Coach Norm Stewart said. 'This team did a great job. This club plays so hard, it is what every coach aspires for and I can't be prouder.'

Missouri earned the fourth seed in the Midwest Regional and will face Xavier Thursday in the first round.

Little Xavier beat up the bigger Tigers on the boards 44-29, and the quick-jumping Musketeers pulled a 70-69 upset in the first round of the Midwest Regional in the Hoosier Dome. Xavier (19-12) became the second team from the MCC ever to win a first-round game in the six years the league has received an automatic NCAA bid.

Missouri coach Norm Stewart laid the loss at his team`s feet, which sometimes looked as if they were encased in concrete gym shoes. Pressed for an explanation, Stewart called for a dictionary.

``Dead. Don`t you understand that term?`` he said. ``Have you ever seen a three-day old beer? We were that flat. It showed in our legs. We left part of ourselves in Kansas City.``

That`s where Missouri won its conference tournament last weekend. The Tigers, who also took the Big Eight regular-season title, edged Kansas in the tourney final. Xavier, seeded 13th in this regional, has never been confused with the Jayhawks.

Missouri`s most prominent player, junior forward Derrick Chievous, scored 16 points but did nothing to help his reputation. Not to downgrade the solid defense played against him by the Musketeers, but Chievous was often lackadaisical and stopped himself by standing too much on offense.

After scoring 6 early points, he added only 3 more in the last 15 minutes of the first half as Xavier used a 24-9 rebounding advantage to take a 36-32 halftime lead. Chievous was then scoreless in the second half until the closing four minutes.

``I`m physically bruised and bleeding,`` he said. ``Whenever the ball came my way, Xavier crashed on me.``

Chievous, a third-team All-America, was upstaged by Xavier's 6-3 Byron Larkin as Missouri - the fourth seed in the Midwest and winners of nine straight - was ousted in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Xavier (Ohio), 70-69, at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis.

"Our kids played with tremendous amounts of courage and determination," winning coach Pete Gillen said. "We won because the kids believed in themselves. We bent but didn't break."

The Musketeers (19-12) won despite shooting 21 for 54 (38.9 percent). They never trailed in the second half and outrebounded Missouri, 44-29.

Larkin's three-point shot gave Xavier the lead for good at 48-45, and his two free throws with 31 seconds to go gave the Musketeers a 70-66 lead. Lynn Hardy, who topped Missouri with 21 points, made a three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining, but Xavier was able to dribble away the remaining time with Missouri failing to foul to stop the clock.
