how does that help in the long run?

Fans going even when we suck can only help our problem. What good coach would want to come to a place where fans don't care? What AD would make a splash hire for fans that don't care? What recruit would want to come?

We have a new AD, maybe he will be different.

Our team needs us, when we're good and bad.

I don't blame you for not driving 4 hours though.
