They were the most popular fraternity on the campus of college basketball in the early 1980s. Led by a Nigerian soccer player named Hakeem Olajuwon and a lightly recruited hometown kid named Clyde Drexler, the University of Houston Cougars not only electrified the NCAA Final Four with three straight appearances (1982-84), but they also helped transform the game itself. In this 30 for 30 film, director Chip Rives ("Brian and The Boz") brings back the high-flying circus act under ringmaster Guy V. Lewis and spins a tale of true greatness and crushing heartbreak. But while exploring that larger narrative, Rives also focuses on the disappearance of enigmatic role player Benny Anders and the lasting brotherhood that compels teammates and 1981-82 co-captains Eric Davis and Lynden Rose to try and find him after more than two decades of mystery.

For those that don't recall, perhaps MU's greatest chance at a national title was thwarted by the then mostly unknown Phi Slamma Jamma crew. In 1982 MU faced a Houston team that would famously become referred to as Phi Slamma Jamma featuring the likes of Rob Williams, Clyde Drexler, and Akeem Alajuwon. MU had claimed the program’s first ever number 1 national ranking that season and featured 3 All American’s in Stipo/Sundvold/Frazier. MU would be ambushed by Houston’s superior athleticism and the Cougars would take a 10 point lead with 5:30 to play. Rickey Frazier was the only Tiger who could match Houston’s athleticism, and despite making no field goals in the first half, Frazier would carry the Tigers back with 25 second half points and a career high 29 for the game. But MU was not able to overcome 18 turnovers and 13 missed free throws and they lost 79-78 to the eventual Final Four Cougars.

Had they won that game, they would have not only advanced but advanced to a Final Four to be played in St. Louis. If only Cavener could hit free throws.
