that have experienced downturns and gotten near that range. St. John's was #157 a while back. Certainly a rich basketball history there. Wake Forest is another. USC was around 150 last year and has been as low as 220. Iowa was #174 in their down period. Houston and Tulsa, both of whom have had tourney success in their histories, have been ranked lower than that several times.
By no means is it good, but it's not as exclusive as you paint the picture. Heck, Mississippi State started there last year. It's just not been where Mizzou has been historically until this recent stretch. And, there's not a tremendous difference between say, #160 and #144 - it's usually a matter of schedule strength or a win or two.
