The only thing worse would be Sophie suffering a season ending injury. But I would argue losing Frericks is just as bad. Frericks, though undersized, gives us an inside presence offensively because she is so smart around the basket and gets her shot off so quickly. We will have no inside offense at all now, which means teams can focus even more on Cuningham. The Porters are under even more pressure now to stay healthy, a big if, and really excel. The inside size and strength of the better SEC teams is just going to destroy us now.
Without seeing how any of the newcomers fit in and contribute and how much the returning players have improved, I would say losing Frericks for the season takes Mizzou from a potential 4-5 national seed to a 9-10 and barely making the NCAA tournament, just like last year. If Frericks recovers, another big if, and is at least the player she was before, then the big national breakthrough for Mizzou WBB will come in 2017-18, not this year.
