MU assistant coach Matt Zimmerman had similar thoughts the summer before when he spotted Denmon while scouting the AAU circuit for potential recruits.

"I was just watching him, how hard he was playing," Zimmerman said. "I just liked his effort. At that time, he wasn't really a spot-up shooter as much as he was just slashing and attacking. I just thought, 'That's Coach Anderson's kind of player."

Denmon could score in bunches, making seemingly impossible shots from all over the court. If he had a signature move, Stitzer said, it was driving baseline and slamming the ball home.

Zimmerman became a regular spectator at Hogan Prep during Denmon's junior season, when he averaged 31.1 points in 13 games.
