Hans was never close to 100%. I'd say Boehm was even further away from 100% as Hans. Abbington was a bust and Walters was out with an ACL (not that he was a stud anyway). So, we were down to Witter and Hunt. Hunt did an admirable job considering his limitations and I think Witter played his a$$ off, but we were woefully thin at RB, talent-wise.
Cuellar apparently didn't want to play football after his suspension and Howell didn't qualify. So, McGovern was moved to LT and somehow Abeln beat out McNulty. We were left with an overwhelmed Abeln next to a gimpy Boehm. Hall was a disappointment and probably should've just thrown Pendleton into the fire much earlier, but GP didn't. Chappell was never really starting quality and probably should've thrown Adams into the fire much earlier, but GP didn't.
Leftwich was the only SR receiver and the others weren't ready, physically or otherwise.
And then you have Mauk and Lock. We all know what happened there.
It was a perfect storm of crap.
This year we add (2) quality grad transfers and get back JJ. Suddenly, (2) positions of real weakness are now positions of strength with real depth.
Lock is a year older and stronger. Reports from Odom and other teammates indicate he has a "10-fold" better grasp of the offense and coverages.
TE isn't any better or worse, so that's a wash, although maybe better considering the scheme Heupel wants to run. We'll know more Sat.
Now to the OL. Sounds as though Howell and Adams are doing very well at the tackle positions. I always though Pendleton could be an all-SEC type talent when he's done here. That leaves Abeln and Bailey. Again, both are a year older, stronger, and more confident. Sounds like from camp reports that the line is doing very well against one of the best DL's in the country.
If that's indeed the case and barring a rash of injuries, the O as a whole will be much improved. With our D, it only takes a decent to above-decent O to win a lot of games.
