1. He was frustrated with the fundraising challenges posed by a small-market athletic department trying to compete in a big money conference. He launched a football stadium project but it stalled with the 2008 slowdown and he wasn't able to get it back on track. Those very same challenges -- slightly different flavor -- exist at MU.

2. He didn't have a good working relationship with his boss: President Elson Floyd.
