It wouldn't necessarily be good for players.
A lot of players flip late in the process. Some may regret it, but I bet most don't.
An early signing period means Maclin plays for OU, Gabbert and Hoch for Nebraska. Several incoming recruits wouldn't be Tigers, either.
Signing early locks a player into the school when a coach can still leave or get fired. I know many like to believe players should commit to a school, not a coach, but we also all recognize that some coaches are much better recruiters than others. That's not because they sell the school better. It's because they sell themselves. The reality is many of not most players choose largely based on the men they'll be playing for, just as many of us do when we decide to take a job.
Unless the NCAA changes the rules with regard to LOIs, I like things the way they are now. Recruits shouldn't be locked into situations that can easily change in major ways before they ever step foot on campus.
