PHILADELPHIA — Tempers flared Tuesday morning at breakfast meeting of Texas Democrats after a Bernie Sanders supporter calling for dialogue suddenly went negative on Hillary Clinton, sparking a loud scene of shouting, boos, and tears.
The room of national delegates, expecting a peace gesture from a group of Sanders supporters, erupted in jeers when Russell Lytle, an activist from Denton, made clear that the Sanders "revolution" was not over at the Democratic Convention.
"We want to be clear," Lytle said. "We are currently condemning our current presumptive nominee."
Lytle immediately withstood an barrage of angry Clinton supporters who rose to their feet and chanted "Hillary!" Lytle, somewhat shaken by the reaction, backed off a little later, voluntarily turning over his convention credentials and telling reporters, "My word choice might not have been the best."
But the scene that unfolded showed that even amid Sanders' call for unity the night before, his followers' feeling are still raw – as are those of many Clinton delegates.
"Who is he to condemn anyone?" said Alfredo Jimenez, a Hillary delegate from Laredo.
Texas Democratic leaders from both the Clinton and Sanders camps called for calm and unity. Garry Mauro, the Texas State Director for Clinton's campaign, called for respect on both sides, noting that Sanders' supporters are getting a chance to demonstrate their preference during Tuesday night's roll call of the states.
"Our objection is not the vote. Our objection is the language used to describe Hillary Clinton!" shouted Jack Weiss, a Clinton delegate from Ft. Worth. Weiss said Lytle apologized to him later.
"We've got to open our arms so we can win this election in November," said Mauro, recalling the disappointment of Clinton backers like himself when she was defeated by Barack Obama in the 2008 primaries.
State party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa also took to the stage to calm the room, telling the delegates, "What you heard was not what was supposed to be said."
Several Sanders backers also addressed the Texans to plead for unity and patience. "On behalf of the Bernie Sanders campaign, don't cast off everyone just yet," said Jen Ramos, a Sanders delegate from Austin. "While I am a Bernie Sanders delegate, I am first and foremost a Democrat."
