Used to be stay in 20 years or get nothing. NO 401K equivalant. No match, very few professional pay plans.
You also just couldnt stay 20 unless you were capable of being promoted. IF YOU GOT PASSED OVER Twice you were sent packing. Oh not to mention, on the officer side, when you did get promoted to Colonel, you had to wait to actually pin it on, and get the new salary, as it is set by Congress how many people of each rank you can have at one time.
Perhaps others should adopt their system
