He is having a bad year currently in the first year of the deal, but way too early to say it's a bad contract or even that he was expensive. The Royals signed him for well below what baseball writers were projecting him to sign at.
It could be argued that you build the outfield around Gordon, making him A franchise player, not necessarily THE franchise player.
A silly argument to have none-the-less, especially with a Cards fan just looking to troll.
