terms, but I don't think that our Founding Fathers would be happy with where our country has devolved to at the moment.
For the record, I'm all for our police given the necessary training, equipment and logistical and political support to do their jobs and to be as reasonably safe in doing so as possible. BUT, I think that the recent federal supplying of the police with military equipment is a symptom of how far our country has fallen... that such equipping is necessary in the first place, and an indication of where we are heading.
I think our government is out of control, doing stupid things, and is gearing up for a lot more unrest that they are anticipating in the near future. I also believe that police are pawns in all of this. I think most are honest, hard working and courageous and want to do the right things, such as to keep law and order and protect the average law-abiding citizen.
Our Founding Fathers would have wanted local police to be able to protect themselves, but they were clearly worried about the very common and most disastrous problem of protecting citizens from the government. From their viewpoint, and I think they were correct, the natural order of things was for government to grow in power and to become totalitarian with the citizens becoming helpless in the face of overwhelming government power.
We have moved significantly in that direction, and this is one obvious example of it.
