Major upheavals every 52yrs. 1860, 1912, 1964, 2016

1860
At the Democratic convention in SC, the pro-slavery delegates walked out, leaving Democrats nominating Stephan Douglas.

The Southern Democrats re-convened in Richmond to nominate VP John Breckenridge to their new party, the Southern Democratic Party.

The nativist Know-Nothing Party with former conservative Whigs, were now the Constitutional Union Party nominated John Bell. Strong on Union (against secession), anti-immigration, but slavery neutral.

The Republican Party was only 4 years old. Founded as an anti-slavery party, uniting abolitionists, free-soilers, and liberal Whigs, nominated Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln won, but only 40% of the popular vote, and no southern or border state. Stephen Douglas only won Missouri, Bell winning KY, TN and VA. Breckenridge taking the south.

1912
Republican Party splits between Liberal and Conservative lines. Liberal former president Teddy Roosevelt wanted back the presidency from conservative Taft. Almost turning violent. Dynamite explosions, scenes of Taft supporters wielding clubs and baseball bats and even of a supporter of Roosevelt holding a loaded gun to the head of a leader of a Taft delegation. TR’s delegation walked across the street to form the Bull Moose Party. Clearing the way for Democrat Woodrow Wilson to win.

1964
Again, the Republican Party is split between Liberal Nelson Rockefeller and conservative Barry Goldwater. California primary was expected to move Rockefeller into the lead, but as fate would have it, no. Recently divorced and remarried Rocky left the campaign in CA to go back to NY for the birth of his son, by his much younger new wife. California votes for Goldwater and he wins the nomination, with many Republicans refusing to endorse him, and some actually backing the Democratic nominee, President Johnson. The party was at its lowest point, with the worst popular voter percentage defeat in a two-way race in modern history.

2016
Carnival Republican Convention starring Duck Dynasty and Scott Biao. Trump's wife reading plagiarized speech, most subdued response to Trump getting the nomination ever. And once again, Republicans failing to endorse the nominee. Leading the way, Ted Cruz getting a prime time speech slot, failing to endorse and running a fine line on whether Republicans should even vote for Trump, and getting booed off the stage. In 2nd place, home state governor John Kasich failing to endorse or even show up for the convention.
