Colleges use "scholarships" that are just tuition discounts to let students who are likely to do well pay less and students who are likely to need more resources to pay more. The internal number is always a secret, but it's usually in the neighborhood of 50-60% of the sticker price. That's the average they want from all students. Then they advertise a high sticker price to make it seem like you're getting such a great deal and generous scholarships.
It's an old private school trick that Drake didn't invent (Connecticut College invented it), but almost all private schools follow this model.
Almost no one who attends actually pays $51,444/yr.
