Universities were started to further academia and research. In the age of representative government, they were given the mission of serving the people, since the people were paying for the universities. Our universities no longer serve the citizens; tuition is so high as to take most any benefit away from the education except for a few choices, and actual education of the students is an afterthought. Research dollars, which are ultimately corrupting, control what goes on at the universities.
Note how unscientific science has become, or how the humanities have lost academic rigor and become propoganda.
