Thames was obviously devastating and changed the potential directory of the program and a number of important outcomes. The recent examples would be Michael Porter Jr and Jontay's injuries.
Some for consideration:
- Curtis Berry getting injured before 1979-80 NCAA tourney and being unavailable in our Sweet Sixteen run
- Marc Dressler being lost for the 1980-81 season
- Lynn Hardy losing most of his senior season of 1987-88
- Lee Coward breaking his wrist down the stretch in 1989-90
- Kelly Thames aforementioned injury before the 1994-95 season
- Kareem Rush having to play with a broken wrist in the 2000-01 NCAA tourney
- Rickey Clemons breaking his hand late in 2002-03
- Klieza being lost for the year after non-con play in 2003-04
- Stefhon Hannah breaking his jaw and missing the rest of the 2007-08 season
- Laurence Bowers being lost for the 2011-12 season
- Kim English getting injured in the 2011-12 Big 12 tourney
- Bowers being re-injured during SEC play in 2012-13
- Montaque Gill-Caesar hurting his back in the 2014-15 Braggin Rights game
- Michael Porter Jr missing almost his entire freshman year in 2017-18
- Jontay Porter being lost for the year in 2018-19
Those are the big ones I can recall. Given who the player was, what kind of team they were playing on, and what ended up transpiring afterwards there are a decent amount of different ways to assess and rank the biggest impact.
I think I might be inclined to say the Lee Coward injury was the biggest, we went from being arguably the best team in the nation to completely collapsing and not really accomplishing anything and that team had so little depth. You could also argue that with Berry in 1980 it gives us a much greater chance at defeating LSU, but that also probably means Dressler doesn't have the opportunity to emerge against Notre Dame. Similarly adding Bowers back to 2011-12 would be outstanding, but that probably means Kim English plays a completely different role and is likely disruptive and the team dynamic changes considerably.
