Given that Clemson and FSU are now in the mix, twelve more ACC teams become available for the B League, creating the opportunity for a new SEC mega deal involving 40 teams.
The current SEC + OU & TX + Clemson & FSU becomes the A League.
The remaining Big 12 & ACC teams become the B League.
These 20 team leagues can organize in pods or divisions, that's less important than the League System aspect which is: at the end of each season, the top four teams from the B League swap places (and conference schedules) with the bottom four teams in the A League.
That aspect makes the bottom of the new SEC as exciting, in some respects, as the top, as teams fight to stay in the A League or rise out of the B League. It's a dynamic no other conference has.
Now money: In 2019, the SEC, ACC & Big 12 collected roughly 1.37 billion in revenue combined. Fixing the B League distribution at 70% of the A League distribution, yields payouts of 40M for the A League and 28M for the B League.
Yes, that's less than the current SEC distribution without the B League, however, the SEC would be in position to negotiate an even better TV deal. If the new 40 team SEC could push total revenue up to 1.7 billion, the numbers move to 35M and 50M respectively. At 2.04 billion the numbers go to 60M, 42M respectively. At 40 teams, it may be possible for the SEC to get even more than that.
The key is to reward A League teams without punishing B League teams so much that they can never rise out of the B League. That keeps things interesting.
Saving the B League programs (as opposed to letting them sink to Mountain West levels) will ultimately maximize SEC A League revenue over the long run because the SEC will control a majority of quality college football content. That control will increase in value over time faster than other conference deals.
That's the long-term bet...
