The box score showed a dominant double-double. The game story showed one ticked-off Tigers coach.

Duncan, the Demon Deacons' 6-foot-10 All-America center, was "really a good basketball player," according to Stormin' Norm Stewart, who couldn't help but point out his belief the future No. 1 pick in the NBA draft received whistles his players didn't.

"(The officials) seem to recognize who he is, though," Stewart said in Vahe Gregorian's account for the Post-Dispatch. "He's got a nice reputation. We need one of our guys to have that."

It was February 9, 1997. The Tigers (12-10) had taken down the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks earlier that week, beating their bitter rival by four points at the Hearnes Center. The arrival of second-ranked Wake Forest (18-2) offered a chance to once again grab the nation's attention. But the Big Fundamental could not be contained.

The Tigers, led by senior guard Jason Sutherland's seven 3-pointers, splashed in 15 treys, a school record at the time. They trailed by two at the beginning of the second half and cut the deficit to seven points in the final 4 minutes. Yet they never found an answer for Duncan, who scored 18 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and spoiled the Tigers' game plan by refusing to foul out of the game.

Duncan made seven of his nine field-goal attempts. Mizzou's entire team out-rebounded him by only two. Kelly Thames, the Tigers' 6-foot-7 forward, took the brunt of the punishment. Duncan limited him to one made shot on 14 attempts and let him gather just four rebounds.

"He gave a good effort," Stewart said of Thames. "(But) even when he shot it on the outside, I thought he was still looking at the tree."

"I don't think if they would have made 60 3s, they would have won," Wake Forest center Loren Woods said after Duncan's Deacons captured a 73-65 win in Columbia, Mo.
