With Mizzou off this week/weekend, before closing the fall schedule at a woeful Ole Miss team next Friday and Saturday, some significant matches happened in the SEC, with potential spring NCAA tournament implications.

Kentucky is rolling on as expected, whipping Miss St in straight sets on Friday, should finish off the sweep today.

TAMU, thought of as a lock for the NCAAs, is really struggling to replace the talent that graduated. First they struggle at home to beat LSU in 5 sets, then last week they lost both matches, at home, to an average Miss St team. Then last night they were whipped by Arkansas on the road in 4 sets for their third straight loss. No team playing this fall has lost so much reputation as TAMU, and they have to be considered a question mark for making the NCAAs next spring. At least they will have some potential opportunities in tbe spring to earn their way in, since they didn’t play Kentucky, Florida, or Mizzou this fall.

And speaking of Florida, they were shocked Thursday by South Carolina, losing in 5 sets on the road. They blew a 2-1 set lead, fell apart in a 25-13 fourth set debacle, and lost the fifth set 15-12. Don’t think anyone saw that coming.

It’s admittedly a small sample size, but right now Kentucky looks like the best team in the SEC, Florida a step below but still should make the NCAAs easily with a lower seed than they are used to, and SC is now in a group along with Mizzou and TAMU fighting to make the SEC at least a 3 bid conference in a year when the at large berths have been sliced in half from 32 to 16.

I don’t think Mizzou did anything this fall to particularly help our chances for a bid. Assuming a sweep of Ole Miss next weekend, we at least avoided a harmful loss, but didn’t get anything like a signature win after playing Kentucky very close early before falling apart late to lose both matches. And besides Florida, who we hopefully will play twice in the spring, there are no sure fire opportunities against top 25 teams left. Not having any non conference chances for resume improving wins could come back to bite us in the spring. Not having Omazic or LMM will make it even tougher.
