Smells like a run coming on football players, hope that isn’t the case. I hope he has a balanced list that includes all sports, as appropriate.
I’ll be shocked if J’den Cox isn’t #1, and the next 3, in some order are Karissa Schweitzer, Chelsea Thomas, and Sophie Cunningham. So that leaves 20 more spots, and a ton of possibilities. Football and Men’s BB are going to take up a large chunk of those 20 remaining spots.
For the sports I follow more closely, some thoughts:
VB: If Kreklow is in at #29, for the list to have any credibility at all it will also need to include Lindsey Hunter and Alyssa Munlyn. Both were clearly better. But will VB get at least 3 of the 30 spots? Something tells me not likely.
Softball: Chelsea is of course a lock for top 5, and really should be fighting Karissa for #2 on the list. Sophie was great, but never dominated her sport like the other 2 did. Emily Crane, Sami Fagan, Rhea Taylor, and Taylor Gadbois would be my next picks, in that order. But there won’t be 5 softball players on his list, and maybe not even 3. But Crane and Fagan deserve to be there. Especially before a 5th QB makes the list.
WBB: I don’t expect many more besides Sophie to make the list. Jordan Frericks is the best bet, and deserves to be there. Kerensa Barr, Bri Kulas, Evan Unrau, Amanda Lassiter are in the next group, but I doubt any of them make it.
Non-revenue sports I pay some, but not a lot of attention to:
Baseball: The MU website did top athletes for each decade, and had Aaron Crow, Kyle Gibson, Max Scherzer on the first, and TJ Sikkema, Tanner Houck, and Trey Harris on the second one. There won’t be 6 baseball players on Matters list. So which of these 6 (or others), are the most deserving?
Wrestling: After Cox, have not clue, but I know several wrestlers racked up multiple AA honors, Askren, Lewis, Houdashelt have been on similar lists. Certainly another couple wrestlers deserve to be on his list. Who are the most deserving?
Soccer: Sarah Leubbert was all SEC first team twice and second team twice. Is that good enough or does soccer get shut out.
Gymnastics: Britney Ward might be the best bet, 4x all SEC, 3x 2nd team AA. Is that good enough, or was there someone better? Doubt we see multiple gymnasts on Matters list.
Golf, track, swimming I have no clue.
