resulting from the NCAAs rash and rushed decision to grant every spring sport athlete another year of eligibility.
This is now what Mizzou’s softball roster will look like next year, barring any transfers.
Freshmen (15): Cook, McGivern, Moll, Warick, Schumacher, Weber, Nichols, Frizell, Heckencamp, Honnold, Laird, Mortimer, Nicholson, Phillips, Krings.
Sophomores (5): Rollin, Raabe, Bailey, Burks, Kadlec.
Juniors (12): Kessinger, Wilmes, Moore, Wert, Myint, George, Decker, Chaumont, Dandola, Judge, Schockley, Koester.
Seniors (1): Daniel
First observation is the obvious one. That is an insane distribution of the four class sizes. 15, 5, 12, 1. Just insane. That's 33 players total. Equally insane is the 15 person freshman class created here by the NCAA decision.
This isn’t just a 1 time, 1 year impact. For the next 4 years we will have 5 recruiting classes jammed into a team roster that should only be made up of 4 recruiting classes.
In Mizzous case it is exacerbated by us having only 1 senior this year, and only 1 senior next year, Daniel in both cases. When she graduates after the 2021 season (or even if she chooses to not come back), we will only be reducing our roster by 1 person. And then for 2022 we will have 32 players, plus another incoming freshman class, let’s say 6-8 players, which would make a 38-40 person roster, which is also insane, and untenable.
Teams with a more normal distribution of classes, such as 6 seniors who should have left, and 6 freshmen coming in, will also have an artificially bloated roster next year, and for years to come.
Is all this worth it? I think it would have been better to just say sorry to the players this year, all of you will have 3.5 year careers in college instead of 4.0. Get over it and move on, this was an unforeseen act of god type of situation and you were unlucky to be playing when it hit.
Managing rosters for the next 4 years is going to be a nightmare.
And yes, a lot of players might transfer from Mizzou. There will have to be an overflow dugout created in the pitchers bullpen just to seat 33-40 players. And no, I have no idea whatsoever who they might be.
