is generally a good rule to follow. No less so in college sports.

It would be interesting to know when exactly the Kreklows decided they were going to retire and not coach the 2019 season.

Common sense tells you that if they had announced their retirement after the end of the 2018 season, or even by early sometime in 2019, the AD would have had sufficient time to do a nationwide coaching search and bring in the best coach available, probably (hopefully) someone with significant head coaching experience and success at a P5 conference position or strong mid-major program, of which there are many out there. In that scenario, there is zero chance Mizzou would have chosen Josh Taylor, only 26, barely out of college himself, and with absolutely no college coaching experience except the last 3 years as a Mizzou assistant coach.

I hope for the Kreklows sake that this was a sudden decision on their part, and was in no way connected to a desire by them to force Mizzou to appoint their family member to a position he is otherwise clearly unqualified for, by age and experience.

However, it is not uncommon at all for long time coaches, legacy types (which the Kreklows clearly are), to try and influence, if not baldly pick, who their successor will be.

I think the loyal fans of this very good program deserve to know more about the timing of their decision to retire. I’m not holding my breath though.

If the Kreklows timed their retirement to present Mizzou with a fait accompli giving Mizzou no choice but to promote an unqualified family member, that would put a stink on the end of fine careers they had there.

There is at least the appearance of impropriety here, until the Kreklows and Sterk clear it up and offer more information about the timing of the retirement.
