The Los Angeles Lakers have rescinded their qualifying offer to Johnathan Williams. That makes Williams an unrestricted free agent, and therefore far less likely to return to the Lakers next season. Williams fell under the category of pleasant surprise last season.

Williams spent most of his time in the G-League, but was always a welcome presence when called up to the NBA. He is the epitome of an energy big, athletic enough to protect the rim and throw down dunks without any illusions about his perimeter abilities. He needs to get stronger to defend the post in the NBA, but there is a place in the league for Williams if his body develops. He is a smart player who brings great effort to the floor whenever he gets the chance.

If the Lakers don't bring Williams back, he should be considered one of the top two-way candidates available for other teams and potentially even someone who deserves an NBA roster spot. He played well in the NBA last season and was one of the better big men in the G-League. The Lakers just couldn't commit the resources necessary to developing him moving forward, but that doesn't mean other teams shouldn't. At his price, Williams was an absolute steal for the Lakers last season. He could very easily be that sort of steal for another team next year.
