The top 6 major conferences in basketball by themselves are composed of nearly 100 schools. Those considered traditional blue bloods probably eat up the majority of the top 25-50 along with others considered "elite" because of exposure and being established. Sure there are scattered few successes by other schools outside of those that may fall in there from time to time but not with real consistency. It's crazy to stress over losing top 50 and diminishing even 100-150 (Marcus Denmon was 150 exactly in 2008 on rivals) let alone 50-100. So yeah mainly target them and settle for the occasional higher ranked until you establish lasting success and your profile will elevate more often in that great.
