“I’ve never rooted for Mizzou to lose a game ever,” English said by phone this week. “I will when we play them. But that will be the first time.”
“Yes, I would love the chance to run my own program one day,” he said. “But I don’t have a time table on that. I don’t have a date. I don’t have an age. I am laser focused on Tennessee, our players, and making them better. And evaluating and identifying future prospects. And planning to win the next game. If you focus on those three areas as a coach, the rest will take care of itself.”
This is kind of an interesting tidbit:
Few knows this, but after English was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 2012 draft, he volunteered to help Haith's staff scout opposing teams. During his playing days in the NBA, and the seasons playing overseas that followed, English was breaking down film of Mizzou and Tulsa opponents, sending along what he discovered. He did this for two and a half years.
“It was a great way to let me practice my craft,” English said. “I would come home after practice, then get to work on (Mizzou’s) opponents. I sent it to Haith and his staff. I don’t know what they did with it.”
