“And I say that knowing that, Paul, this is as strong as I have seen the SEC [in] basketball ever,” Pearl said. “I’ve never said this, in all my years in the SEC or even working for ESPN: The SEC in men’s basketball this year, I think we’re the strongest in the country. I think we’re the strongest in the country because I think we’re the deepest in the country. I think there are 12 teams that legitimately have a chance to be in the NCAA Tournament, and I betcha nine or 10 get there. Nine or 10.”
“I think the universities have invested in the basketball programs,” Pearl said. “So many of the programs that were traditionally at the bottom of the league have now invested in basketball with new facilities and new coaching staffs, elevated everybody. The fans have responded. And I think that the team that is actually able to handle some adversity — the champion is going to lose some games, like a bunch of games this year. And so one of the things that I’ve got to prepare my team to do is, what’s going to happen if we lose two in a row in the SEC? Are we done? Are we still in this thing? Because nobody’s going to breeze through this conference without some blemishes.”
