But Pinkel was trying to protect what he built. He didn't understand the ramifications of siding with the players. St. Louis, before the Ferguson riots, has been an elusive and tricky recruiting base for many years. Pinkel worked hard to get his share out of that city. If he didn't back the players he would have been branded an unsympathetic bottom line coach. The problem, probably like Fulmer, was that Pinkel was away a lot and let the program go awry after the two division titles. Because he was absent too much he failed to recognize signs within the locker room that something like this could happen. Some day a fortunate reporter will write a killer book about the insides of this event. The tentacles of Ferguson deliberately extended down I 70 and grabbed an unsuspecting and rudderless institution by the throat. Pinkel made the wrong call, but he had no idea what was at stake.
