How much harder is it to recruit a Top 20 class in Football versus Basketball?
There are 133 teams in FBS Football (261 total in D1 including FCS).
There are 633 teams in D1 Basketball.
According to the NCAA, about 1,030,000 HS participants in football, and 550,000 in basketball. 3% of those participants go to D1 in football and 1% in basketball. 31,000 football vs 5500 basketball.
5.6 times as many football players go to D1 as basketball.
In terms of numbers of players available to teams:
All D1 teams: FB-118 BB-8.6 or 13.7 times more players for football
FBS teams: FB-232 BB-8.6 or 26.8 times more players for basketball
The Top20 is 15% of D1 Football teams
The Top20 is 3% of D1 Basketball teams
1. There are 27x more football players available to FBS than D1 BB
2. There are 14x more D1 FB than D1 BB
In terms of availablility to D1/FBS 3 BB players is equivalent to 81 or 42 football players.
There are 85 scholarships for FB, 13 for BB. That’s 2.7 HS athletes for each FBS FB scholarship, and 0.67 HS athletes for each D1 BB scholarship. 4 times as many FBS FB vs D1 BB.
Recruiting elite basketball players is harder than elite football players due to 1) availability of players and 2) amount of competition for each player.
